OVERVIEW:
Three (3) types of radiation are used to deliver external radiation therapy and stereotactic radiosurgery to patients:

1. X-rays;
2. Gamma-rays; and
3. Particles.

X-rays and gamma-rays, both of which are types of photons, are well-established and have been used in hospitals and freestanding clinics for decades. These systems are used to treat a range of patients with intracranial or extracranial conditions.

Particle therapy systems are used much less frequently. Until the first hospital-based proton therapy system was established in the U.S. in October 1990, only a limited number of patients globally had been treated with proton therapy. The patient mix varies by geographic region; in the U.S., most centers have isocentric gantries, which are used to treat a range of conditions. Outside of the U.S. (OUS), most proton therapy facilities have historically used fixed-beam delivery systems and focused primarily on ocular cancers, although this is changing. As of mid-2011, 6 OUS centers were equipped to deliver radiation therapy using carbon ions, which some researchers believe is more effective than proton therapy.
