U.S. MARKETS FOR SPINAL FUSION PRODUCTS

281 Pages | 33 Exhibits | 2005 Analysis | Forecasts Through 2009 Product Family: Market Reports

OVERVIEW:
It is estimated that approximately 50 million people in the United States (U.S.) suffer from back pain. In 2004, more than 1 million spine surgeries were performed in the U.S.--far more than the number of hip and knee replacements combined. Factors driving growth of the spinal surgery products market include growing numbers of people with degenerative disc disease (DDD). DDD is typically caused by gradual disc damage and often results in disc herniation and chronic, debilitating lower back pain. It is most common among otherwise healthy people in their 30s or 40s and affects approximately half of the U.S. population age 40 and older.

Due to the persistence of chronic back pain despite conservative therapy, the current gold standard for the treatment of DDD is surgical intervention. Spinal fusion is one of the most common types of spine surgery, with an estimated 380,000 procedures performed in the U.S. in 2004. The goal of spinal fusion is to eliminate motion of the segment of the spinal column responsible for chronic back pain. A successful spinal fusion procedure creates a permanent solid bone bridge and stability between two or more adjacent vertebrae.

This report focuses on several core spinal fusion product areas, including: anterior cervical plates and pedicle screw fusion devices, interbody fusion devices, bone graft substitutes and growth factors, and minimally invasive spinal surgery systems. These products defined a U.S. spinal fusion products market worth approximately $2.3 billion in 2004. This market is growing at a healthy annual rate of 10.7%, projected to reach more than $3.8 billion in 2009. The largest market segment in the year 2009 will be spinal bone graft substitutes and growth factors, which cumulatively will contribute nearly $1.9 billion, or 50% of the total spinal fusion products market. This is due to the need for a more effective alternative to painful patient autografts, and the shortage of donor bone grafts.

This dynamic report from Medtech Insight includes analyses of current and emerging spinal fusion products and technologies and presents competitors, market forecasts, and opportunities. Covered topics include: anterior cervical plate systems, bone growth factors/orthobiologics, demineralized bone matrix, metallic and polymer interbody fusion devices, pedicle screw systems, structural spinal allografts, synthetic bone graft substitutes and new minimally invasive spinal surgery systems.
